Media Series: Should the U.S. let its print newspapers die?

As over 2,900 dailies and weeklies folded or merged in unprecedented numbers during the last two decades, local and national coverage essential to democracy is faltering. Small weeklies have been hardest hit.

Print newspapers have helped for almost 250 years to preserve democracy, but should democracy now help them or let them and their journalism succumb with online journalism taking their places?

Join us April 30, 2024, for 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a lively and informative discussion about the problems, benefits, conflicts and potential solutions.

This event is sponsored by the Harvard Kennedy School New England Alumni Association and co-sponsored by Harvard's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy and the Harvard Law School Association of Massachusetts.

Leadership Breakfast meeting:Creating a Policy Powerhouse

Please join us for the next virtual Leadership Breakfast meeting, one in a series offered by the Harvard Kennedy School New England Alumni Association (HKSNEAA):

Speaker

Maria Mossaides (MC-MPA ‘90), Director, Office of Child Advocate. Maria Mossaides has spent almost five decades working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as both an attorney and administrator. Eight years ago, she was appointed by Governor Charlie Baker to the position of the Commonwealth’s Child Advocate, only the second person to hold the job. At the time of her appointment, Maria was the executive director of Cambridge Family and Children’s Service (now Bridges Homeward), a job she was reluctant to give up after returning to working directly for children and families after a long hiatus.  Maria started her career doing educational equity work. “Children are my soul work” she often says. However, her skills at fixing broken systems led to career assignments that did not involve human services. She decided to accept the appointment after the death of almost thirty children resulting from the poor functioning of the child protective service system.

The Office of the Child Advocate (OCA) has been transformed from an ombudsman function into a robust oversight and policy-making agency. It is a model for the 16 other child advocate offices across the nation. By focusing on data, collaboration, systems change, and transparency, the Massachusetts OCA has led successful efforts for changes in statute, policy, and practice. Many of these changes resulted from taking advantage of opportunities. The changes at the OCA have far exceeded Maria’s initial expectations. Maria will describe the steps in the OCA’s growth in size and influence and the critical role that the legislature played. Her own skills have grown dramatically which was unexpected at what she describes as her ”last job”.

Police Intimidation of the Press: The Marion, KS Search & Seizure Outrage

  • 79 John F. Kennedy Street Cambridge, MA, 02138 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Public officials probably don’t miss the watchdog function of the press in light of the violation of press freedom in Kansas earlier this year.

And perhaps some of their constituents have forgotten the benefits of a robust Fourth Estate. Violations of both the First and Fourth Amendment Constitutional rights now worry some in the media. Accusations of "fake news" undermine media credibility and create combativeness by public officials to challenge the legitimacy of a free press.

Contemporary Issues in the Media is sponsored by the Harvard Kennedy School New England Alumni Association. This webinar is co-sponsored by the Harvard Law School Association of Massachusetts and the Harvard Club of Kansas City.

Join four experienced journalists and a media lawyer for a discussion organized by HKSNEAA Board Member Bill Seymour about the impacts these changes are bringing to journalism and any "chilling effects" they might have on aggressive reporting.

Moderator - Walter Smith Randolph is Connecticut Public Broadcasting’s investigative editor where he leads The Accountability Project, a group of reporters who produce investigations for CT Public’s NPR and PBS affiliated stations. He also serves as Vice President-Broadcast of the National Association of Black Journalists and is an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. The New York City native spent a decade reporting at television stations across the country before joining CT Public.

Panelists

Eric Meyer is the majority owner, editor, and publisher of the Marion County Record in Marion, Kansas.  Police in Kansas raided his local newspaper and mother's home on August 11, seizing computers, cellphones, hard drivers, router and other materials and records. It sparked outrage from First Amendment advocates and that may have contributed to the death of Meyer's 98-year-old mother and the paper's co-owner. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation began an investigation and helped to get items seized returned to the paper

Meyer has spent over 45 years in journalism, including news, photo and graphics editor at the Milwaukee Journal, was a Pulitzer-Prize nominee for coverage of computer hackers and over two decades as a journalism professor at the University of Illinois.

Dean Pagani is a professor of communications at the University of New Haven. He began his career in journalism, transitioned into communications roles in Connecticut state government and the U.S. Senate, and represents private and non-profit clients as a public relations consultant. In his work as a photojournalist, he has experienced firsthand the changing nature of the relationship between the press and authority.

Paul Bass has been a reporter and editor in New Haven for 45 years. He founded the online-only New Haven Independent and parent nonprofit online Journalism Project in 2005. He is the co-author, with co-author Douglas W. Rae, of Murder in the Model City: The Black Panthers, Yale, & The Redemption of a Killer (2006, Basic Books) about the 1969 murder of a Black Panther in New Haven and the resulting trials and FBI revelations surrounding the case. He is also a former lecturer in political science at Yale University.

Caitlin Vogus, a 2010 graduate of Harvard Law School, is the deputy director of advocacy at Freedom of the Press Foundation, where she works to defend and protect press freedoms, journalists, and whistleblowers. Prior to FPF, Caitlin was the deputy director of the Free Expression Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, a senior staff attorney at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, an attorney advisor at the Federal Communications Commission, and a law clerk at the Virginia Court of Appeals.

Leadership Breakfast meeting:Stewarding Change - a model of leader-full movement building

Among some activists, it is common to idolize leaderless self-organizing natural systems as an analogy for how to reorganize human endeavors. However, accountability requires transparency about organizing structures and decision-making, and leadership is essential for efforts to evolve and adapt in the face of unexpected challenges and opportunities.

Orion will discuss his experience that "leader-full" rather than "leader-less" initiatives are most effective. Efforts to establish economic democracy are rooted in shared leadership and accountable decision-making, from worker cooperatives, to credit unions, and community land trusts. The example of Boston Food Forest Coalition, as a democratic community land trust, is instructive about the obstacles to democratically sharing ownership (and therefore power) over land. It offers a model of "stewardship" that invites neighbors to step up and take on the role of leaders in their neighborhoods. From its grassroots origins, neighbors in Boston recognized the need to form an organization that would allow them to hold land and protect it from development. Close to a decade of effort, the Boston Food Forest was born and is now growing rapidly. The ethic and practice of stewardship creates a community of leaders working to realign our city with the regenerative powers of nature, creating climate resilience and racial equity on the pathway to a better future.

 SPEAKER:

Orion Kriegman (MPP ‘96) is the founding Executive Director of the Boston Food Forest Coalition and played a major role in the conception of Egleston Community Orchard in Jamaica Plain, which was the first food forest site to be adopted into the BFFC land trust. Since then, Orion has collaborated with the city of Boston, colleagues, and local neighbors to expand the number of healthy food forests included in the land trust and the number of Bostonians included in the movement. Orion has a background directing community-organizing work at Jamaica Plain New Economy Transition (JPNET), a group that worked to catalyze community leadership toward the launch of new initiatives such as farmers markets, land trusts, and spaces for community dialogue and action across race and class divisions. BFFC emerged from this work, and became Orion’s full-time focus. Prior to the creation of BFFC, Orion received his Masters in Public Policy and Urban Planning from Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He spent nine years at the Tellus Institute coordinating the Great Transition Initiative, an international network of scholars and activists examining the requirements for a transition to a sustainable planetary civilization. In 2015, Orion completed his Permaculture Design Certificate studying with the Resilience Hub in Portland, ME. Orion was recognized by the Institute for Nonprofit Practice as a 2023 Changemaker.
